10 tips for eating more Fruit and Veg on a Budget

Most people understand the message of 5 a day – which in our view is really the minimum.  This provides everyone just enough fibre, which is essential for good gut transit, and a host of vitamins, minerals & antioxidants (as long as you eat a good mix).  In other countries the minimum recommended portions are 8 to 10 a day.  But getting them on a budget may feel a challenge.

Here are a few tips to help:

1.Fruit and vegetables are usually cheaper if you buy in season.

2. Buy from farmers or street markets as again they are often a bit cheaper.   Hertford has a weekly market and a monthly farmers market.

3. Check supermarkets where there are often 3 for 2 deals.

4. Shop at the end of the day when ‘in date’ foods are discounted down – these can be kept generally or frozen down.

5. Snacks  – throw away the choc and crisps and buy a banana or apple instead – half the cost and much better for your health and wellbeing.

6. Keep cooked excess veggies and throw into soups or slow cooked casseroles.

7. Canned and frozen count towards the targets and these can be less expensive.  Keep a stock of tins for emergencies.

8. Cook larger quantities and freeze down – means you can buy the foods in bulk a bit cheaper and eat later.

9.   Shop with a friend at the markets and share the deals and the savings.

10. Make ‘real’ meals rather than buying processed meals.  You are in control of how much you add to the meals and thereby get more in your meals.  These are also considerably cheaper than shop made meals.
